Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet) Overview

The Royal Palace is the official residence of Sweden's monarch, currently King Carl XVI Gustaf, and houses the offices of the King and Queen and the Duchess of Halland; the latter is the most senior member of the royal family after the King and Queen and their children. A fortress was first built on the site in the 13th century and, as Sweden increased in status, so did the castle, finally becoming the official royal residence in 1521 under Gustav Vasa. The Vasa family developed the palace on a grand scale, adding Renaissance and Baroque features. After fire struck in 1697, much of the interior of the palace was reconstructed over the next 60 years, resulting in a variety of architectural styles. Visitors can view some of the magnificent rooms within the palace, such as the Royal Apartments, the Treasury and the Apartments of the Orders of Chivalry and watch the changing of the guard, which takes place every day.
