Penrhyn Castle Overview

Built in a dramatic location between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait by Thomas Hopper from 1820-37, Penrhyn Castle was the home of the Pennant family who made a fortune from a local slate quarry. The architecture and much of the interior of the castle has been designed in a mock Norman style and the main entrance to the house opens to a grand staircase adorned with carved stone. The restored Victorian kitchen and domestic rooms are open to the public and an Industrial Railway Museum and a Dolls Museum are housed in the old stable block. The castle is surrounded by parkland, semi-wooded walks and formal gardens including the famous Victorian Walled Garden which contains many exotic plant species.
