My Son Overview

Situated in a narrow valley in the Duy Xuyen District in the Quang Nam Province, My Son is the site of a former Champa Kingdom that in its day rivalled other great Southeast Asian kingdoms such as Angkor in Cambodia or Bagan in Myanmar (see separate entries). The site was the religious center of the Cham people with the oldest temple dating back to the fourth century. Successive Cham rulers added towers and structures to the site with the majority added in a 700-year period starting from the seventh century. Whilst war, time and neglect have reduced many of the structures to crumbling ruins, it's still possible to see the remnants of the site's former grandeur and significance. The My Son sanctuary was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
