Mikines (Mycenae) Overview
Mycenae was first inhabited during Neolithic times and is located between Corinth and Argos, on top of a hill halfway up the Euboea Mountain. It was a citadel palace that included extensive fortifications, shrines and private dwellings. The site continued to be inhabited until the end of the third century AD. Mycenae was first discovered in 1874 by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who began excavation in search of gold and believed the site he had found to be the home of Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek assault on Troy. Highlights at Mycenae, which is one of the most popular attractions in Greece, include the Citadel, the Treasury of Atreus, the Lion Gate and the Royal Cemetery. Air: Athens International Airport.
