Lincoln Memorial Overview
Modelled upon a Doric temple, the Lincoln Memorial is a tribute to President Abraham Lincoln and the nation he fought to preserve during the Civil War (1861-1865), the nation's bloodiest conflict. Enclosed by a colonnade and complemented by a reflecting pool in front, a large statue of President Lincoln, sculpted by Daniel Chester French, sits in solemn thought, grasping the arms of his throne-like chair. The monument has the Gettysburg Address inscribed on its southern wall and a mural painted by Jules Guerin above it, showing the angel of truth liberating a slave. As a symbol of freedom and racial harmony, the Lincoln Memorial was the site of Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech in August 1963. Air: Washington Dulles International Airport, Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport, Baltimore-Washington Airport. Rail: Train: Union Station. Underground: Foggy Bottom. Road: Bus: Public services.
