Laxey Overview
Built around a small harbor, the tranquil village of Laxey is situated along the sides of a glen and dates back to the Viking era. Laxey is famous for the Great Laxey Mines which flourished between 1876 and 1882. Close to the hamlet of Agneash overlooking Laxey is the Great Laxey Wheel. Designed by Robert Casement and built in 1854, the wheel was used to pump water needed for the Great Laxey Mining Company. The wheel, named Lady Isabella after the Governor's wife, was acquired by the Manx Heritage Trust in 1989 and has been restored and still attracts thousands of visitors each year.
