Kronborg Castle (Kronborg Slot) Overview
Strategically located on a site overlooking the Sound, the stretch of water between Denmark and Sweden, Kronborg Castle at Helsingor (Elsinore) is of great historical importance playing a key role in the history of Northern Europe during the 16th to 18th centuries. Work began on the castle in 1574, with its defenses being reinforced in the late 17th century. Kronborg, which is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe, is also famous for being the setting for William Shakespeare's play Hamlet (the Prince of Denmark) and has staged many performances of the play over the centuries. Most of the rooms and fortifications in and around the castle are open to the public, along with the Danish Maritime Museum, which is home to many temporary and permanent exhibitions.
