Jersey Zoo Overview

Jersey Zoo was established in 1959 by Gerald Durrell (1925 -1995) and is located around his home, Les Augres Manor, where Durrell's widow, Dr Lee Durrell, still lives. The manor is also the headquarters of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. At just 12.55 hectares (31 acres), Jersey Zoo is relatively small but it is still one of the island's most popular attractions focussing as it does on providing safe habitats for some of the world's most endangered species. There's a strong emphasis on education and there are many interactive displays aimed at promoting awareness about animal conservation. Two of the most popular enclosures at the zoo include the orang-utan and gorilla parks. In addition to providing an attraction for visitors, the zoo also manages many research and breeding programs and is committed to animal conservation. The zoo also has its own organic farm to ensure its animals get chemical-free produce.
