Gyeongju Overview

The city of Kyongju was once one of the six largest cities in the world and the capital of the Silla Kingdom, which existed between 57 BC and AD 935. Known today as the 'museum without walls' and now spelt Gyeongju, the city houses numerous historical sites and relics, and is one of the most important ancient cities in the world, attracting around eight million visitors every year. The city has many royal tombs, museums, temples and monuments and houses an impressive collection of relics from the Silla period in the Gyeongju National Museum. Highlights include artifacts found in the Geumgwanchiong and Cheonmachong tombs, as well as the Seokguram Grotto and Bulguska Temple, which both feature on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
