Glendalough Overview
Known in Irish as 'glenn of the two lakes', Glendalough is a glacially sculpted beautiful green valley. During Ireland's 'Golden Age' (AD 500-900) the country flourished as the poetry, music and writing of its missionaries and teachers influenced scholars across Europe. During this time, Glendalough was home to a monastic settlement established by St Kevin, a reclusive monk, who for seven years enjoyed a simple and solitary existence, with animals and birds as his only companions. St Kevin came to the area during the sixth century and founded his monastery in AD 498, remaining there until his death at the grand old age of 120.
