German Underground Hospital Overview
The incredible complex of tunnels at the German Underground Hospital is the largest construction in the Channel Islands and was hewn out of solid rock by forced laborers of many nationalities during the German occupation of the island during the Second World War. Measuring 7,000sq m (75,348sq ft), the complex consists of two sets of nine parallel tunnels which were originally built as shelters for the German forces. It was later used as an underground hospital and could house up to 1,000 patients in times of emergency. Visitors enter the complex through an entrance that is barely visible from above ground. The Underground Hospital is only open during the summer months.
