Anne Frank House (Anne Frankhuis) Overview
Anne Frank House is the historic house where Jewish teenager Anne Frank, her family and four other Jews hid from the Nazis during World War II. Anne herself shared a tiny room with family friend Fritz Pfeffer (known to Anne as Albert Dussel). In August 1944, after more than two years living in a cramped secret annex of the canalside townhouse on Prinsengracht in the center of Amsterdam, they were betrayed to the Germans. Anne died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp; however, her father survived and published her diary, which became world famous as testament to one person's courage in the face of persecution. Today, the house is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the memory of Anne Frank, and the place where the original diary is on display. Visitors can see the room where Anne wrote most of her diary and, although the house was stripped by the Nazis after the Franks' arrest, audiovisual presentations document how the rooms would have looked.
