Mexico City International Airport

The second-largest airport in Latin America, Mexico City International Airport is the busiest airport in the country, receiving around 26 million passengers in 2011. The two-terminal facility has direct and non-direct flights to countless destinations throughout the Americas and the rest of the world, in addition to numerous domestic routes. The busiest international routes are Los Angeles, Miami, and Houston in the US, and Madrid and Paris in Europe, while the most popular domestic flights are to Cancun and Monterrey. Around 30 airlines serve the airport, the most active being AeroMexico, followed by Interjet, Volaris, and VivaAerobus.

Both terminals have a variety of restaurants, cafés, and duty-free stores. Terminal 1 is served by a metro line which runs into Mexico City, and the nearby Pantitlan metro station is within walking distance of Terminal 2. Bus services and authorized taxis are also available. Alternatively, all major car rental companies are present if you would like to drive yourself.

Cancun International Airport

Mexico’s second busiest airport receives around 13 million annual passengers, half the number of Mexico City’s visitors. It is, however, the main gateway into the country for international visitors. The three-terminal facility receives many flights from the US, Latin America, and the rest of the world. The busiest routes are the domestic Mexico City and Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas in the US. About 60 airlines fly from Cancun - more than double the amount which serves Mexico City International Airport. The terminals are all equipped with a range of shops, restaurants, and bars. Although no public transport runs from the airport to Cancun city, an authorized taxi stand can be found outside in addition to car rental companies, such as Avis and Europcar and it’s not too far of a trip.

Guadalajara International Airport

Also known as Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport, Mexico’s third-busiest airport handled 7.2 million in 2011 and has recently opened a second terminal. It receives more domestic flights than international flights, primarily from Mexico City and Tijuana. However, routes from US cities Los Angeles, Houston, and Phoenix remain busy. Less than 20 airlines fly from the airport, yet it is a hub for domestic carriers Volaris and VivaAerobus. Restaurants, bars, and various duty-free shops can be found inside and the airport includes a bus terminal which operates services around the local area, in addition to authorized taxis and rental cars.
