Mallorca Taxis and Car Rental
Taxis are available in all resorts and towns in Mallorca, and can be hailed or booked in advance. Cabs are metered in Palma, but you’ll hardly need one for getting around downtown as most is walkable. In the capital, Asociación Servicios Fono Taxi (+34-971-728-081) is reliable, as is Taxis de Cala d’Or (+34-971-657-058) in Cala d’Or. Your hotel is often the best source when it comes to reliable operators. Rates are set at the airport, but are subject to negotiation between destinations.
It is worth renting a car on Mallorca as the island is large. There is somewhat of a loop around the coast, linking all resorts, as well as radials from Palma. The roads are in good condition, trip times are short and the scenery in the Sierra de Tramuntana is spectacular. Avoid driving in Palma city though as traffic is bad.
Mallorca Water Taxis
You can arrive at Mallorca from Barcelona, Valencia or Denia (south of Alicante) via ferry. The daily Trasmediterránea boat from Barcelona takes 3.5 hours, while ferries from Valencia run Monday through Saturday. There are services from other Balearic Islands, including Ibiza Town and Mahon, Menorca. Most drop-off in Palma, but there is also service to Alcudia from Menorca. Chartering a private boat is a great way to see Cabrera Island.
Mallorca Trains and Buses
The rail network in Mallorca is limited and mostly used by tourists. The main service runs to Sóller aboard the Ferrocarril de Sóller from Palma (at Plaça d’Espanya) via the stunning Sierra de Tramuntana. There is also a service to Inca and other villages via Marratxí, which continues on to Sa Pobla and Manacor run by Transport de les Illes Balears. The Sóller train is the most useful.
Transport de les Illes Balears also runs the urban bus network, which is your only real option for getting between resorts outside of taxis or car rental. Trips are comfortable, reliable and cheap. There is also bus service in Palma—Empresa Municipal de Transports (or EMT)—along with a hop-on, hop-off tourist tram. One of the major lines runs an island circuit, covering all the top attractions in just an hour and 20 minutes. Tickets are good for 24 hours.
