Zurich International Airport

There are no airports directly in Liechtenstein so most people fly into Zurich in Switzerland. The facility handles more than 24 million passengers a year, and stands only 70 miles from Liechtenstein. Swiss International Airlines, the flagship carrier has flights from several US cities including New York, Newark, Miami, and Los Angeles. In addition, American Airlines also offers routes between New York-JFK and Zurich.

In addition to duty-free, there are a number of shopping options inside the Main Terminal and Terminal E. Famous fashion retailers include Bally, Bvlgari, Burberry, Bucherer, and Longchamp. Restaurants, cafés, and bars are available, including Burger King, Center Bar, Monteux Jazz Café, and the Sports Bar. Internet access, document drop off, day rooms, airline lounges, and car rental are located at the facility.

Car rental is the easiest way to get into Liechtenstein, as the Swiss autobahn system is not only speedy, but reliable. Swiss Federal Railways connects the airport to Buchs Station, which is only a short bus ride from Schaan and Vaduz. There are also buses that run from the airport to Swiss towns like Buchs, which is just a stone’s throw from the border.

St Gallen-Altenrhein Airport

30 miles away from Liechtenstein is another Swiss airport that tourists can use to reach the country. Most of the flights into St Gallen originate from the Austrian capital of Vienna. Austrian Airlines flies direct to St Gallen on a daily basis, but there are also connections into Liechtenstein’s city of Balzers for a pretty penny. Rhein Helicopters also travels from St Gallen to Balzers regularly, but this is also an expensive option.

Friedrichshafen Airport

Another entry point into Liechtenstein is through Germany’s Friedrichshafen Airport. More than 500,000 passengers use the facility every year, making it an important gateway into the Bodensee region of Germany and Switzerland. It is only about 70 miles from Vaduz. US travelers can fly into Friedrichshafen through Rotterdam or Frankfurt. Intersky and Hamburg Airways are the two busiest airlines serving the facility.
