Language

English is the official language along with Chamorro. Japanese is also widely spoken as immigrants have been around since WWII.

Currency

The US dollar (US$ or USD) is the official currency of Guam and is available in denominations of US $1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. Coins are available in US $1, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 1 cent pieces. Most internationally-recognized credit and debit cards are accepted. Hotels, the airport, grocery stores, and shopping malls have ATMs. Travelers’ checks are also honored. Many US banks dot the capital city.

The electrical sockets in Guam are similar to the ones in Canada and the United States, so American travelers do not need an adapter. Voltage is 110 to 120.

Communications

Guam’s country code is +671. All telecommunications facilities are available 24 hours. Roaming agreements are available with all major international mobile phone providers, but those who wish to get local service can consider companies like GTA and DOCOMO.

Duty-free

You may import 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes or 200 g of tobacco without incurring customs duty. Non-residents are permitted to bring in a gallon or 3.8 liters of spirits. Also allowed are goods with a value of up to US $1,000 and a reasonable amount of perfume for personal use. If you are bringing prescription medications, be sure to indicate that they were legally authorized by a doctor.
