Morocco Taxis and Car Rental

Taxis are a popular way of navigating within and between the towns and cities of Morocco. There are two types of cabs, Petit taxis, which generally have meters, but are not always turned on. Travelers should insist on these before departing. Grand taxis are used mainly for long distance travel between towns and can be recognized as old Mercedes sedans that have fixed rates for specific routes. They can fit up to six people and will often stop along the way to pickup more passengers.

Travelers have their pick from reputable rental car companies such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and Budget. The easiest place to obtain a vehicle at one of Morocco’s many airports. While renting a car is a convenient way to get around, it can become quite expensive as gas prices are high and fuel can be scarce in remote areas. The roads are generally in a good condition and the network is quite extensive. English-speaking visitors should also note that signs are primarily in Arabic or French.

Morocco Trains and Buses

Morocco has a reliable network of inter and intra city buses with routes running from Er Rachidia to Fes, and Essaouria all along the Atlantic coast that connect with Marrakech. There are tourist-focused buses which have air conditioning, televisions and refreshments, making for a comfortable journey, but are more expensive than local ones. Local buses are generally quite crowded and for the adventurous traveler, a great way to meet locals and see off-the-beaten path areas. Tickets for both can be purchased from bus stations all over the country.

There is an extensive rail network in Morocco with many lines and seat options catering to every budget and preference. The train system is operated by Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) which offers reasonable ticket prices. Passengers can choose from basic local coaches or more expensive air-conditioned cars. Most parts of the country are covered between Oujda and Tangier in the north, Casablanca in the west and Marrakech inland. Unusually the large centers of Agadir and Essouira are not reachable by train so travelers will need to take a domestic flight or a bus. If you plan to stay in the country for an extended period of time, consider the Interrail Zone F ticket which allows for unlimited travel for a fixed cost.
