Owen Roberts International Airport
Owen Roberts International Airport is Liberia’s only air travel hub, and is located about 40 miles from Monrovia in Harbel township. Two passenger buildings replaced the main terminal, destroyed in the Civil War, with one newly built and handling all Air France and Delta flights and the other controlling with the remainder of the commercial arrivals and departures. Only one or two flights arrive with connections to the USA and Europe daily so plan your travel accordingly.
For travelers from America, Delta offers three flights every week from New York and twice weekly from Atlanta. British Airways offers a route from London Heathrow, Air France flies from Paris Charles de Gaulle, Brussels Airlines connects from Brussels and several African hubs like Lagos, Abidjan, Freetown, and Accra. Royal Air Maroc also offers a flight to Accra while Kenya Airways flies to Nairobi.
Passenger facilities are spread over the two buildings and include a bank, currency exchange, and business class lounges in the departure halls. Bars and restaurants are available and a duty-free outlet is located in the departures hall of the main building. Parking can be found on-site, as is car rental, and arriving passengers are advised to arrange a hotel shuttle or other means of transportation from the airport as taxis are expensive and intermittent.
Sprigs-Payne Airport
Monrovia’s second, smaller airport, Sprigs-Payne, is located three miles from the city center and mainly used for UN flights. Sierra Leone carrier Fly6ix operates twice weekly connections from Freetown, Conakry and Banjul. The terminal is basic, with a waiting room and bar.
