Taxis are abundant, safe and easy to spot and hail in Ghana. They can be chartered or shared, depending on your preference. The lake steamer called the Yapei Queen plies the water between Yeji and Akosombo about two times per week. There are also ferries that offer services from Yeji to Makongo and Buipe, from where you can arrange onward transportation to Tamale. Advanced booking is recommended and trips can be organized via the Ministry of Tourism.
Ghana Trains and Buses
Rail links connect cities like Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi though services are presently limited between Accra, Naswam and Tema due to renovations. Trains are currently used as commuter transport for residents, but more routes are expected to open once the system is complete. In the meantime, buses are available for long distance domestic as well as international travel.
Buses are the safest means of transportation for long journeys, and they are fast and reliable, even though occasional breakdowns are often part of the adventure. Routes are available to and from main cities like Accra, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Tamale, and Kumasi. In general, tickets should be bought at least a day in advance to guarantee a spot as they fill up quickly on the day of travel. Air-conditioned coaches are preferred for long distance travel as they are a lot more comfortable than ordinary school buses.
