Point Yamu by COMO, Phuket, Thailand
In December 2013, COMO Hotels and Resorts — the name behind Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos, as well as city hotels, including Metropolitan by COMO in Bangkok and London — opened its fourth private island resort, in Phuket, Thailand. Called Point Yamu by COMO, this landmark opening brought COMO’s vision of privacy and stylish beach living to Thailand.
Point Yamu is located on the eastern side of Phuket on the tip of Cape Yamu. The distinctive limestone outcroppings of Phang Nga Bay are within the resort’s viewshed. The bay includes hundreds of islands, most of them forested, uninhabited and ringed by coral reefs making for excellent cruising, diving and exploration days within these UNESCO-protected, ecologically significant waters.
The resort sits comfortably in the landscape with 360 degree panoramic views across the Andaman Sea and each of the 106 bedrooms, suites and private villas offer stunning sea view. Many of the rooms have pools, or multiple bedrooms configured for families.
The interior aesthetic is by Italian designer Paola Navone, reflecting COMO’s signature clean lines and pared-back, contemporary style united with Navone’s eclectic, colourful approach and the use of local materials. The result is a dazzling palette of bright aquamarines and hot oranges, with Thai artisanal techniques such as traditional wood tiling and woven rattan adding texture reflecting the presence of the sea, Thailand’s Buddhist culture and the colourful influence of Phuket’s Peranakan culture.
In-room facilities are decadent in their detail. Each room is air-conditioned and beds are dressed in the finest Egyptian cotton. Other facilities include LCD televisions with satellite channels, direct dial telephones and minibars. In addition, guests can take advantage of complimentary WiFi internet access.
As with all COMO Hotels and Resorts, cuisine is considered a crucial element of the guest experience. Guests have the choice of two restaurants at the resort. Located poolside and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, ‘La Sirena’ offers Italian cooking and locally caught seafood with views of aquamarine Phang Nga Bay stretching out beyond the 100m infinity pool. ‘Nahmyaa’ serves lunch and dinner inspired by spicy southern Peranakan Thai cuisine. In addition, guests can benefit from COMO Shambhala Cuisine, which is designed to maximise energy with the use of raw foods rich in living enzymes, vitamins and sea minerals. There is no calorie counting, although dishes are conspicuously light.
It is not just through food that Point Yamu aims to cater to guests’ wellbeing. The award-winning COMO Shambhala Retreat offers yoga, Pilates and related treatments. The retreat building fits appropriately with its context, incorporating nature into the spa experience so that guests feel more connected. Facilities include seven treatment rooms, a yoga studio and two Jacuzzis and all with sea view. Therapies include various kinds of hands-on healing, from the company’s signature COMO Shambhala Massage to a traditional Thai Massage. Treatments unique to Point Yamu include the Lanna Heritage Full Body Compress utilising traditional Thai herbs and spices in warmed boluses, a Thai Abdominal Chi Massage to promote better digestion, and a Lanna Heritage Body Scrub utilising lemongrass and galangal to stimulate circulation and nourish tired skin.
For the outward bound, Phuket’s year-round sunshine encourages active pursuits. The warm and typically calm Andaman Sea beckons watersports enthusiasts with snorkelling and diving opening up to another world teeming with marine life. Complimentary daily excursions to the nearby island and bike tour in Yamu village are available. Other popular activities include hiring a private yacht, and fishing and Ao Por marina is located just a 15-minutes drive from the resort. The island boasts three golf courses, one of which was designed by Jack Nicklaus, which is only a 20 minutes drive from the resort. Family activities are manifold, and are supported by an experienced team of activity leaders and babysitters, with the kids club called Play by COMO.
