Location

The airport is situated 13km (8 miles) southwest of Shanghai city center.

Airport News

A new terminal, extensions to metro lines 2 and 10 linking the airport with downtown Shanghai, and a new bus terminus were completed in time for the World Expo 2010. There are also plans to extend the city's high-speed Maglev line to the airport.

Driving Directions

Taking the Yan'an Xilu Highway is the easiest way to get to the airport from central Shanghai. The Hongqiao exit is clearly signposted.

Car Hire

Most visitors hire a car with a driver (often from their hotel) on a daily or weekly basis. Otherwise, Angel Car Rental is based at the airport. Avis is currently the only international car hire company to operate at the airport. It offers self-drive cars and cars with drivers.

Public Transport

Bus: Public buses run regularly to city destinations, including the city ticket office. Bus 925 runs to People's Square, bus 938 runs to Pudong Yangjiadu, bus 806 runs to Zhong Shan Nan Yi, bus 807 runs to Shanghai West Railway Station, and Airport Bus 1 runs to Shan Xi Lu. There is limited space on buses for luggage. Further information is available from Airport Shuttle Bus Services (tel: (21) 6834 6912 or 6645). Shuttle: Most major hotels run shuttle buses to/from the airport. Coach: Long-distance coach services run to Suzhou, Nan Jing and Hongzhou. Taxi: Taxis are available outside arrivals; the driver should use the meter, however, if it is not working, agree on the fare before leaving the airport (journey time: approximately 25-40 minutes). Travelers should make sure they join the correct taxi queue, as there are separate queues depending on the distance of the journey. A taxi trip into the center includes a toll, upon exiting the airport, which is added to the fare. It is best to have the destination required written in Chinese or indicated on a map.
Rail: Metro lines 2 and 10 (tel: 643 70000; www.shmetro.com) link the airport (Terminal 2) with central Shanghai. Line 2 also runs east to Shanghai Pudong Airport. Journey time to the city center is around 35 minutes, and the fare is ¥6.

Extensive long- and short-term parking is available in front of both terminal buildings.

Tourist information is available by telephone (tel: (021) 6439 0630). All signs are in English and Chinese, as are the intercom announcements.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: There are bureau de change, banks and ATMs throughout the airport, as well as two post offices, one in each terminal. International direct dial telephones are available in Arrivals, while public telephones take local coins and phone cards. Internet is also available.
Eating and drinking:
There are restaurants, bars and coffee shops in both terminals.
Shopping: There is duty-free shopping, as well as a shopping market located just outside the airport entrance. Chinese specialties, such as silk clothing and scroll paintings, are available for purchase.
Luggage: Trolley hire is available. Uniformed porters can also be hired, although travelers should note that tipping is not allowed. A left-luggage service is also available. A lost property office is located in the Arrivals Hall of Building A (tel: (021) 5114 2071).
Other facilities: These include smoking areas throughout the terminals, a fitness center in the Shanghai International Airport Hotel (see below), two clinics and a beauty salon.

Conference and Business Facilities

There are three mini business centers at the airport, offering mainly copying, fax and Internet services. One is located in Building A, and two are in Building B. For more extensive business facilities, The Shanghai International Airport Hotel (tel: (021) 6268 8866; www.siah.com) offers various meeting rooms, telephone, fax, photocopying and telex facilities, as well as catering services, 24 hours a day. VIP lounges are also available.

Facilities for Disabled Travelers

There are toilets for disabled travelers in the terminal building and the airport is equipped with lifts, elevators and ramps to provide easy access.
