Location
The airport is located 12km (8 miles) northeast of Madrid.
Airport News
A dedicated rail connection linking the airport directly with Spain's high speed rail network is under construction. The date of opening is as yet uncertain, but the project is well-advanced.
Transfer Between Terminals
A free shuttle bus transfers passengers between the terminals and the long-stay car park. The T4 building is linked to its satellite building (T4S) through an automated passenger transport system (APM). There is also a free shuttle bus which connects T4 with the other terminals (journey time: 10 minutes).
Driving Directions
From the M40 (ring road), go on the A2 (road to Barcelona) and take exit 12 to the M-14.
Car Hire
Companies include Avis, Europcar, Hertz and National Atesa, with desks located in terminals 1, 2 and 4. AeroCity-Ares Mobile provides chauffeur-driven cars.
Public Transport
Bus: EMT (Madrid Municipal Transport Company) (tel: 902 507 850; www.emtmadrid.es) runs regular public bus services between the airport and Madrid (Avenida de América station): bus 200 stops outside the baggage reclaim area of terminals 1 and 2, while bus 204 stops outside Arrivals at Terminal 4 (journey time: 30mins). Several intercity bus services also call at the airport.
Taxi: Taxis are available from outside all terminals (journey time: 20-30 minutes; fare to city center from about €20); passengers should make sure that the meter is turned on at the beginning of the journey. Passengers are advised not to accept any offers of taxis made inside the terminal building.
Underground: The Madrid Metro Line (tel: 902 444 403; www.metromadrid.es) connects the airport with Madrid's city center station Nuevos Ministerios in the heart of Madrid's financial district (journey time: 12 minutes; fare around €2). The Barajas line (no. 8) provides a fast route from the underground stations at terminals 2 and 4 into central Madrid. The Metro also provides links to stations on the Spanish railway network. There is a RENFE (Spanish Railways) office in the Arrivals area of T1 which provides information about, and sells tickets for, the national rail network.
Car Parking
Long- and short-term car parking is provided at the airport with seven public parking areas. P1 is an outdoor car park located in front of the terminal building; P2 is an indoor car park with direct access to terminals T2 and T3. A Parking 'express' facility, available for short periods only, is located at Terminal 2, and dedicated long-term parking is also available with 1,655 spaces; a free shuttle operates between the long-stay car park and all terminals. There are also VIP car parks.
Information and Help Desks
The airport has more than 22 information counters, located throughout the terminals, with a team of more than 100 'Skycaps' on hand to assist passengers and provide information. There is also a tourist information counter in Terminal 1.
Airport Facilities
Money and communications: Facilities include two banks, several bureau de change, ATMs and a post office. There is a 24-hour bank in Terminal 1. Wireless Internet access is available in VIP lounges and restaurant areas in all terminals.
Eating and drinking: There are more than 30 restaurants, cafés and bars.
Shopping: There are over 100 shops at the airport, including duty-free.
Luggage: There are offices where lost luggage can be reported in terminals 1 and 4.
Other facilities: There are nurseries in terminals 2 and 4, pharmacies in terminals 1, 2 and 4 and First Aid stations in terminals 2 and 4. Travel agencies and tour operators are also represented. The airport also has a playground and a chapel.
Conference and Business Facilities
Seven fully equipped meeting rooms are available at the airport. A business center (tel: 91 333 7024; www.businesscenterbarajas.com) is located in Terminal 4. Rooms are available to hire (tel: 91 393 6797). There are also VIP lounges in all terminals. High Tech Madrid Aeropuerto Hotel (tel: 91 564 5906; www.hightechmadridaeropuerto.com), the closest to the airport, offers a business center and a number of meeting rooms with capacity for up to 100 delegates.
Facilities for Disabled Travelers
The airport is fully accessible to wheelchair users and all airlines can provide wheelchairs upon request; passengers should request this service when booking their ticket. There are reserved car parking spaces for disabled travelers.
