The Right Trip
 By David Noland
An estimated three million whitewater rafters float down more than 200 rivers in the United States every year. And no wonder--riding a bucking rubber craft through frothing rapids can be a real rush.
Water Class
All whitewater is not created equal. Rapids can range from pleasant to terrifying, so choose a river that matches your abilities and personal fun/fear threshold. Fortunately, all commercially run rapids are rated from Class I through V, according to their difficulty and potential danger. Class I and II rapids are mild, suitable for young kids and those seeking a pleasant outing rather than an adrenaline rush. Class III requires adroit maneuvering and will probably get you wet, but present no real danger. Class IV rapids are intense and powerful, demanding quick and accurate maneuvers to avoid dangerous hazards. Class V rapids are for experts only, demanding the highest skill levels and best equipment.
Rafting--Basic
Raft trips come in two basic styles: one-day thrill rides and multiday expeditions. Half-day runs typically cost $25-$75; full-day runs with lunch cost $60-$150. Multiday expeditionary trips take you deeper into remote areas, where you’ll pitch tents along the way and explore by foot from camp. Because of the more complex logistics, multiday trips typically cost $125-$175 per day on domestic rivers and $150-$250 per day for overseas rafting excursions. Ride along in an oar-boat rowed by a professional guide or help out in a paddleboat that is propelled and steered by the customers under the guide’s direction. On most raft trips, either option is available.
Rafting--Pampered
One last decision: How much effort do you want to put in during this waterborne vacation? With a little more money, you can bring a touch of civilization with you. It may very well be camping, but it can be pretty pampered with every creature comfort attended to by your guides. And not just the fireside grub you remember from childhood. Fresh fruit, chilled wine...you’ll almost swear you can hear the string quartet serenade.
